Scotland has an obligation to stand with Hongkongers says senior SNP politician

Speaking at a special event organised by Young Scots for Independence and Stand with Hong Kong, Stewart Macdonald MP, Vice-Chair of the APPG on Hong Kong and Member of Foreign Affairs Select Committee urged Scots to show solidarity with Hongkongers fighting for their freedom. He said:

“What we are seeing all around the world, what we are seeing here tonight, is that people will always push back. There is always light at the end of the tunnel and it is our job to ask what we can do to help.”

Valentina Servera Clavell, Young Scots for Independence International Officer, expressed support for the hundreds of thousands of brave protesters saying, “They will never be able to control us by fear. I stand with full solidarity with Hongkongers and I think in Scotland it our duty to stand with Hongkongers.

“All over the world we are seeing more and more countries trying to be dominated by fear […] But we have also seen the response of the people. Taking to the streets and standing up to these would-be dictators.”

It has now been over 18 months since protests in Hong Kong against a new extradition bill led to a crackdown on the right to protest and political freedoms. A heavily militarized police force, empowered by the introduction of draconian National Security Laws, has inflicted an ongoing campaign against anyone associated with the pro-democracy movement.

Alyn Smith MP, SNP Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, hosted the event on 3rd December entitled, ‘Hong Kong – the death of democracy and how the SNP can help Hongkongers’.
