International human rights expert calls upon UN High Commissioner to “publicly investigate abuses” perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party

Speaking at a special event organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Hong Kong and Stand with Hong KongInternational human rights expert and China Director of Human Rights Watch, Dr Sophie Richardson called upon Michelle Bachelet of Chile, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, to “publicly commit to… gathering testimony and compiling a report” on human rights abuses perpetrated at the hands of the Chinese Communist Party in Hong Kong as well as Tibet and Xinjiang.

Dr Richardson also called upon democracies worldwide to form an alliance to “counter China’s influence across the UN’s human rights system”.

With the implementation of the draconian National Security Law and authorities creating a hotline for Hong Kong residents to inform on each other, the freedom and fundamental rights of Hongkongers have never been under greater threat.

Baroness Bennett, co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Hong Kong, hosted the event on 6th November entitled, ‘APPG on Hong Kong: Repression in Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet’.
