Prison mental health services under strain

The Guardian features a cover piece on problems with mental health services in prisons, which states that about 10% of the prison population suffers from serious mental health problems, with 20% having one of the major mental health disorders (depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, schizophrenia and autism). The article mentions that bed shortages are a serious problem, with a lack of sufficient mechanisms to divert mentally ill people away from the criminal justice system and into hospital care exacerbating the problem.
