A study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development found Britain has the second lowest number of hospital beds per capita among 23 European nations. Since 2001, over 50,000 NHS hospital beds have been lost in England, whilst levels of overcrowding in hospitals have continually breached recommended safety limits.
