The Welsh Government has launched a new education strategy designed to raise performance in Wales’ weakest schools in a bid to drive up standards and bridge the gap with the rest of the UK. Schools Challenge Cymru will see an extra £20 million a year invested into Wales’ schools system, with up to 40 of the nation’s worst performing secondaries benefiting from extra resources.
Education Minister Huw Lewis said the bulk of the new money would be sourced through so-called Barnett consequentials – which sees devolved administrations allocated a share of funding from spending on England-only projects – from the introduction of free school meals in England.
