Buy-to-let landlords have warned the Government that they could turn potential tenants away or even evict them if they are on housing benefit, amid confusion over whether the benefit will be paid to tenants rather than directly to landlords under the coalition’s reforms. Leading private landlord Kevin Green branded the universal credit benefit system a ‘timebomb’ for the sector warning that ‘people are going to be homeless as a result of it.’
