School governing bodies 'to be run like corporate boards'

The Department for Education has published new guidance which calls for new governors to only be appointed if they can prove they have the necessary skills and experience to raise school standards. Guidance states that school governing bodies should contain members with experience in handling performance data, budgeting, performance management and dealing with employment issues such as grievances. The Government hope the guidance will attract more high-calibre governors and encourage more employers to support staff who volunteer.
