Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt will announce monthly mandatory reporting of numbers of staff on hospital wards, although he will reject a fixed minimum nurse-patient ratio. He will propose that the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence draw up a ‘toolkit’ suggesting minimum staffing levels in wards according to the size of ward, acuteness of patient illness, age profile and other factors.
