Survey finds significant increase in private tuition

A survey by the Sutton Trust has found that private tuition for state school pupils is booming, particularly among wealthier families and in London. The Trust found that some 31% of wealthier pupils received private tuition last year compared with 15% from poorer families. The poll of more than 2,500 11- to 16-year-olds in England and Wales revealed that almost a quarter (24%) had received private or home tuition at some point in their school careers – up from 18% in 2005. The poll also found that young people in London are four times more likely to have private tuition than those in Wales.
