Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced candidate to lead a talented team directing a range of integrated public affairs and communications accounts, form an integral part of the company’s decision-making senior team, and take a leading role in identifying and securing new business to ensure the company’s continued growth.

The new Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Director would thrive in a fast-moving entrepreneurial atmosphere, have a love of politics and a high level of professionalism, and be a motivational and trusted leader. We’re looking for someone with substantial experience in strategic communications, reputation management and external relations either in agency or in-house, or with equivalent experience in government or the media.

Job Description 

  • Delivering national & international integrated corporate communications, PR and public affairs campaigns for organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors to further their business objectives.
  • Leading the creation and execution of high-profile PR campaigns that generate substantial and sustained media coverage for a variety of clients across different sectors.
  • Delivering high-level client outcomes, achieving profitability and account growth across a client cluster or leading on a particular policy area.
  • Leading on new business development and meeting growth targets, including development of new business strategies, taking the lead in pitches, identifying opportunities for potential clients and growing existing accounts.
  • Working as part of the senior leadership team to drive forward Whitehouse business strategies and meet business targets, playing a central role in training and developing staff and in delivering the Whitehouse marketing strategy.
  • Development of communication, PR and public affairs strategies and overseeing high-quality production of materials including reports, briefs, press releases, speeches, social media content and presentations.
  • Managing relationships with key stakeholders, including parliamentarians, government officials and journalists, and managing press office activities.
  • Devising and implementing reputation management and crisis communications strategies.
  • Working with the other Directors to manage the company’s overall PR including website and its other digital presence.
  • Line management of consultants including regular reviews and personal development plans. 

Core Competencies 

  • Substantial experience in a senior strategic communications and external relations role. 
  • A thorough and extensive knowledge of the political processes in the UK. Understanding of European politics and public affairs a bonus.
  • Substantial experience of delivering public affairs, media relations and social media strategies.
  • A demonstrable ability to devise and carry out successful integrated political communications campaigns for organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors with demonstrable outcomes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to communicate persuasively with a range of decision makers along with senior corporate personnel.
  • Exceptional writing skills and great attention to detail.
  • Experience of building and maintaining relationships with key journalists, including pitching, interviewing and all press office management.
  • Experience of working with the mechanisms of government and parliament to drive forward change.
  • Experience of presenting reports and presentations both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrable ability to identify and drive forwards new business opportunities.
  • Substantial experience of line management.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing multiple work streams and the ability to prioritise own workload.

EU Associate Director / Director

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced director-level candidate to direct a range of EU public affairs and communications accounts, lead a dynamic and motivated team and take a proactive role in identifying and securing new business to ensure the company’s continued growth.

The new EU director would thrive in a fast-moving entrepreneurial atmosphere, have a love of politics and a high level of professionalism. We’re looking for someone with substantial experience in EU public affairs, corporate communications or external relations either in agency or in-house, or with equivalent experience in the European Institutions or the media. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience leading and motivating teams.

The Whitehouse Consultancy is an independent integrated communications agency that has had a dedicated EU function for over two decades. The position is based in London but travel to Brussels (and other European capitals) will be required.

Job Description

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to communicate with a range of decision makers along with senior corporate personnel.
  • Experience of working with the mechanisms of the European Union to drive forward change.
  • Experience of presenting reports and presentations both verbally and in writing.
  • The ability to identify and drive forwards new business opportunities.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing multiple work streams and the ability to prioritise own workload.

Desirable: experience drafting media and social media strategies, pitching stories to the media, issues management and crisis communications. Knowledge of other languages an asset.

European Affairs Associate Consultant

The Whitehouse Consultancy is looking for a highly-motivated and enthusiastic associate consultant to join its fast-growing EU team. This is a fantastic opportunity for an individual with a keen interest and experience in EU politics and public affairs to develop its career in a leading public affairs and communications consultancy at the heart of the discussions on the future of the future relationship between the UK and the EU.

The safety of our staff is of outmost importance. In an effort to contain the Covid-19 pandemic, our team is currently working remotely. The selected candidate will however be required to be located in the UK.

Job description

  • Monitoring European Institutions work, consultations, calls for evidence and press releases and highlighting issues of relevance for clients, circulating information internally as appropriate and advising on next steps;
  • Advising team members and clients on relevant developments and forthcoming policy or regulatory changes;
  • Responsibility for researching and drafting weekly or regular update documents and emails to clients, and seeing through agreed action as required;
  • Responsibility for monthly or quarterly reports and other client reporting where appropriate;
  • Preparing and updating stakeholder lists and acting as a central reference point for all databases and contact lists;
  • Preparing background notes, detailed briefings, reports, articles, research papers and consultation responses for clients in discussion with the consultants;
  • Drafting correspondence to MEPs, Commission officials and Member State competent authorities and chasing for responses;
  • Scheduling meetings or conference calls between MEPs, officials and clients, and preparing briefing packs ahead of meetings;
  • Arranging events such as seminars, webinars and roundtable discussions;
  • Attending and providing reports on relevant external meetings;
  • Attending client meetings with MEPs or officials alongside consultants, account managers or director level staff, recording notes and follow up actions, participating in discussions and advising the client as appropriate;
  • Supporting internal communications where our role is to provide Secretariat services to a trade body or other coalition of companies and organisations;
  • Contributing to the development of client strategies and new business where appropriate;
  • Joint responsibility for administration tasks in conjunction with other staff members;
  • Any other tasks as required.

Background and qualifications

  • Graduated in a relevant field such as European studies, Political Science or other relevant field;
  • Demonstrable experience within the European Institutions and/or in a Public Affairs role;
  • Language skills: Excellent spoken and written English (Native-speaker level or equivalent) any other languages are considered an asset;
  • The ability to understand and digest complex information quickly and effectively;
  • Sound interest in food, health and digital related policies at European and UK level;
  • Experience of providing a legislative monitoring service;
  • Experience analysing EU legislation;
  • The ability to manage and prioritise own workload;
  • Good writing skills and willingness to contribute to Whitehouse own PR via blogs, research and social media activity.
  • Proactive and dynamic person with excellent personal skills;
  • Flexible work attitude, hands-on mentality, able to work on multiple tasks simultaneously;
  • Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.). Social media skills are an asset;
  • Knowledge of UK parliamentary processes would be considered an asset.

Terms and conditions

  • The post will be available starting from February / March 2021 (exact date TBC);
