Director of Communications

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced candidate to lead a talented team directing a range of integrated communications UK and EU accounts, form an integral part of the company’s decision-making senior team, and take a leading role in identifying and securing new business to ensure the company’s continued growth.

The new Communications Director would thrive in a fast-moving entrepreneurial atmosphere, have a love of politics and a high level of professionalism, and be a motivational and trusted leader. We’re looking for someone with substantial experience in strategic communications, reputation management and external relations either in agency or in-house, or with equivalent experience in government or the media.

Job Description

  • Delivering national & international integrated communications campaigns for organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors, among others, to further their business objectives.
  • Overseeing production of communications materials including reports, briefs, press releases, thought leadership, speeches and presentations, and ensuring quality control on production of all written correspondence.
  • Managing relationships with key stakeholders across the UK and the EU, including journalists, parliamentarians and government officials, and managing all press office activities.
  • Devising and implementing the company’s and its clients’ reputation management and crisis communications strategies.
  • Delivering media training including advising C-suite level staff on strategic messaging, how to respond to media enquiries and how to prepare for interviews
  • Managing multiple social media campaigns simultaneously to enhance traditional engagement channels.
  • Leading on the organisation and delivery of events’ programmes on behalf of organisations and the company across the continent, including exhibitions, conferences, workshops, seminars and awards ceremonies.
  • Handling relationships with external suppliers including website development agencies and SEO agencies, and managing the company’s overall PR including website and its other digital presence.
  • Line management of current team of two, including regular reviews and personal development plans.
  • Leading on new business development and meeting growth targets, including development of new business strategies, taking the lead in pitches, identifying opportunities for potential clients and growing existing accounts.
  • Responsibility for client retention, profitability and budget management within the team structure.

Core Competencies

  • Substantial experience in a strategic communications and external relations role.
  • A thorough and extensive knowledge of the political processes in the UK and Europe.
  • Substantial experience in reputation management and crisis communications.
  • A demonstrable ability to devise and carry out successful integrated political communications campaigns for clients from the public, private and voluntary sectors with demonstrable outcomes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to communicate with a range of decision makers along with senior corporate personnel.
  • Exceptional writing skills and great attention to detail.
  • Experience of building and maintaining relationships with key journalists, including pitching, interviewing and all press office management.
  • Experience of working with the mechanisms of government and Parliament to drive forward change.
  • Experience of presenting reports and presentations both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrable ability to identify and drive forwards new business opportunities.
  • Substantial experience of line management.
  • Demonstrable experience in managing multiple work streams and the ability to prioritise own workload.
  • Experience drafting and implementing successful digital communications strategies with measurable outcomes.
  • Events management experience.
  • Proficient knowledge of SEO mechanisms.

Salary: £55-65,000pa

Communications Consultant – PR and social media

The Whitehouse Consultancy specialises in integrated communications campaigns across public affairs, policy analysis, media relations and crisis communications to engage with decision makers in the UK and the EU to shape issues’ agenda.

This is an exciting opportunity to work within a talented team across a range of UK and EU accounts, support the strategic direction of accounts and the implementation of the day-to-day PR projects. This is a wide-ranging and busy role, working with a small team responsible for media relations, campaigns, digital communications, internal communications, publications and events.

Whitehouse has clients across the health, education, nutrition and third sector industries. The new Consultant would thrive in a fast-moving entrepreneurial atmosphere, have a love of PR and a high level of professionalism. We’re looking for someone with solid  experience in public relations, social media and integrated communications either in agency or in-house.


  • Taking responsibility for strategic oversight and supporting the Communications Director in delivering integrated communications campaigns for the company and its clients, and leading on proactive media relations.
  • Building and maintaining a network of influential UK and EU journalists and increasing breadth and depth of contacts with influencers and industry commentators relevant to the company’s sectors.
  • Planning, managing and implementing social media strategies for the company and its clients, which will include but not be limited to:
    • Growing an engaged community of followers across all company and clients’ social media channels
    • Creating content calendars with optimised timings and diverse content to be scheduled across all major social channels, ensuring a steady rhythm of content that gets positive engagement
    • Experimenting with paid advertising campaigns to boost traffic to websites
    • Reporting on results in order to effectively demonstrate and present actions and recommendations
    • Having the passion and drive to find and test new tools/ways to spice up social media strategies
  • Supporting the Communications Director with corporate reputational issues/crisis management across the business.
  • Contributing to company marketing including writing blogs and articles.
  • Working with external partners including digital agencies on technical websites and SEO, and with designers to create brand compliant social media material.
  • Managing, planning, marketing and attending UK and European events representing the company and its clients
  • Working as part of the team to identify and realise new business for the agency, including taking forward proactive approaches and leading on the preparation of proposals and pitches.


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • Demonstrable experience in public relations, media relations, corporate communications, social media in agency or in-house
  • Demonstrable experience in devising and implementing successful multi-media communications campaigns for organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors.
  • Experience in delivering high-profile social media campaigns with demonstrable outcomes
  • A deep understanding of managing, maintaining and cultivating journalist relationships for communications campaigns
  • Excellent writing skills and experience in writing articles, blogs, press releases, reports and presentations
  • A basic understanding of website management including the use of WordPress, Direct Marketing software, Google Analytics and Search Engine Optimisation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to communicate with and influence a range of senior decision makers and senior corporate personnel in person and in writing.
  • The ability to work and thrive as part of a small and dedicated team as well as without supervision.
  • Well organised and able to manage multiple priorities and varying pressures to meet measurable targets and strict deadlines.
